  General description

  Acetone, also known as 2-propanone and dimethyl ketone, is a colorless, volatile, flammable liquid that boils at 56°C (133°F). It is miscible in water and is generally used as a solvent in the manufacture of lacquers and paints.² It is a manufactured chemical, but is also found naturally in the environment like in plants, trees, volcanic gases, and forest fires, and as a product of the breakdown of the body fat. Other applications of acetone include, it being used in the manufacture of plastics, fibres, drugs and other chemicals.³
